The Complete Parent's Guide to Choosing Safe, Comfortable Soccer Shoes for Every Playing Surface
Does your child need soccer cleats to start playing? Can kids wear regular running shoes for indoor soccer? What's the difference between indoor soccer shoes, turf shoes, and outdoor cleats? And how can you tell if a pair of shoes will leave black marks on a gym floor?
If you're a parent getting your child ready for soccer, you've probably asked at least one of these questions.
With so many different types of soccer shoes available, choosing the right pair can feel confusing, especially when your child is just starting.
At MVB F.C. Soccer School in Mississauga, we work with children ages 3 to 14, from little beginners taking their first kicks to older players developing technical skills and participating in matches.
One thing we always remind families is that children don't need the most expensive soccer shoes to become better players. They need footwear that fits properly, matches the playing surface, and allows them to move comfortably and confidently.
In this guide, we'll explain the different types of soccer shoes, when to use them, what to avoid, and how to make the right choice for your child's age and experience.
We'll also share how families can save money on soccer equipment through our MVB Gear Exchange: Pass It Forward Program.
Why Does Choosing the Right Soccer Shoe Matter?
Soccer involves much more than running in a straight line.
Children learn to stop, turn, balance, change direction, control the ball, and react to other players.
Their footwear needs to support these movements.
Choosing shoes designed for the correct surface can help children:
Maintain appropriate traction when running and turning.
Feel more stable during changes of direction.
Develop confidence while learning new movements.
Control the ball comfortably.
Avoid unnecessary discomfort caused by poorly fitting shoes.
Enjoy training without constantly worrying about their footwear.
Shoes also play an important role in protecting the surfaces where children train, particularly school gymnasiums.
The first rule is simple: choose soccer shoes based on the playing surface, not just the child's age, favourite colour, or brand.

1. Indoor Soccer Shoes (IC or IN): Best for School Gymnasiums
Indoor soccer shoes are specifically designed for hard, smooth surfaces such as school gymnasiums and indoor futsal courts.
Unlike outdoor soccer cleats, they have flat rubber soles without studs.
Good indoor soccer shoes generally offer:
A flat, non-marking rubber outsole.
Traction suitable for smooth gym floors.
Flexibility for running and changing direction.
A secure fit for better movement and ball control.
When shopping, look for labels such as Indoor, IC, IN, Futsal, or Non-Marking.
Not every shoe marketed as an indoor soccer shoe is necessarily approved for every gymnasium, so always check the outsole and facility requirements.
Why Are Non-Marking Shoes Important?
Non-marking shoes are designed to minimize rubber scuff marks on indoor flooring.
When children run, stop suddenly, or turn quickly, their shoes create friction against the floor. Some rubber compounds can leave dark streaks behind.
These marks can be difficult to remove and may require additional cleaning.
School gymnasiums are shared spaces. At MVB F.C., we believe teaching children to respect these facilities is part of learning sportsmanship and responsibility.
Our indoor footwear rule: All players must wear clean, non-marking indoor soccer shoes or suitable non-marking athletic shoes.
Outdoor cleats are not permitted on school gym floors.
2. Can Kids Wear Running Shoes for Indoor Soccer?
Yes! For beginners, suitable running shoes can be a good starting point.
Parents don't necessarily need to purchase specialized soccer shoes before their child has even tried the sport.
For young children, particularly ages 3 to 6, comfortable athletic shoes can work well for introductory indoor soccer activities.
However, they should meet a few important conditions:
Have non-marking soles.
Be clean and free of outdoor dirt.
Fit securely without slipping off.
Provide enough traction on the gym floor.
Feel stable during sideways movements.
Some running shoes have very thick or soft soles designed mainly for forward movement. These may not feel as stable during quick soccer turns.
As children become more active in structured training and matches, properly fitted indoor soccer shoes are often a better choice.
Does My 3-Year-Old Need Soccer Cleats?
Usually, not for an introductory indoor soccer class.
At ages 3 and 4, children are developing coordination, balance, spatial awareness, and confidence.
They need to feel comfortable moving, running, jumping, and exploring the ball.
For a beginner's indoor session, a good pair of non-marking athletic shoes may be all they need.
Before spending money on specialized equipment, why not let your child try soccer first?
At MVB F.C. in Mississauga, we offer age-appropriate soccer programs for children ages 3 to 14. Our youngest players learn through games, movement, and fun activities that introduce soccer fundamentals.

3. Outdoor Soccer Cleats (FG): For Natural Grass
When soccer moves outdoors onto natural grass, footwear requirements change.
FG stands for Firm Ground.
These soccer cleats have moulded studs designed to provide traction on natural grass fields that are firm, dry, or slightly damp.
They are commonly used for outdoor youth soccer practices and matches.
FG cleats can help players maintain grip during acceleration, turning, and changes of direction.
However, they are not designed for every outdoor surface.
Very muddy fields, hard artificial surfaces, and indoor gym floors may require different footwear.
Never use outdoor soccer cleats on a school gym floor. Their studs are unsuitable for smooth indoor surfaces and may damage the flooring.
4. Turf Soccer Shoes (TF): For Short Artificial Turf
Turf shoes are often confused with indoor soccer shoes, but they are not the same.
Turf shoes have many small rubber studs or nubs across the outsole.
These are designed to provide traction on shorter, firmer artificial turf surfaces.
They are commonly labelled TF.
Turf shoes can be appropriate for certain synthetic soccer facilities, including some indoor facilities that use artificial turf rather than a hardwood or synthetic gym floor.
However, turf shoes are not recommended for our school gymnasium training.
The rubber nubs are designed for turf, not smooth gym flooring, and the shoes may not meet the facility's non-marking requirements.

5. Artificial Grass (AG) and Multi-Ground (MG) Soccer Cleats
For older children participating in outdoor soccer leagues, you may also see footwear labelled AG or MG.
AG: Artificial Grass
These cleats are designed for certain modern artificial grass fields. Their stud configuration is intended to work with synthetic playing surfaces.
MG: Multi-Ground
Multi-ground shoes are designed for use across more than one type of approved outdoor surface, depending on the manufacturer's specifications.
They may be useful for players who train on natural grass and artificial fields.
However, the exact type of artificial turf matters. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and the facility's footwear rules.
Neither AG nor MG cleats should be worn on smooth school gym floors.
6. How to Tell if Soccer Shoes Will Leave Black Marks on Gym Floors
This is one of the most important things parents should check before bringing their child to indoor soccer.
A shoe can look perfectly suitable for sports and still leave black streaks on a gym floor.
Here's how to make a better footwear choice.
Check for a Non-Marking Label
Look at the product description, shoe packaging, or manufacturer's website.
The words "non-marking outsole" are a good indication that the shoes are intended to protect indoor court surfaces.
Don't Judge Shoes by the Colour of the Sole
Many parents assume that black soles leave marks and white soles don't.
That's not necessarily true.
A black rubber sole can be non-marking, while a light-coloured sole may still leave residue.
The rubber compound matters more than its colour.
Look at the Outsole Design
For indoor gym training, look for a flat rubber outsole with a suitable grip pattern.
Avoid shoes with outdoor studs or turf nubs.
Check the Shoes Before Training
If you're unsure whether a shoe is non-marking, check the manufacturer's specifications or ask the seller.
A gentle test on a permitted, inconspicuous surface may reveal obvious rubber transfer, but it cannot guarantee that the shoe will be safe for every gym floor.
When in doubt, choose shoes clearly labelled non-marking.
Keep Indoor Shoes Separate
Even non-marking shoes can damage floors when they carry dirt, sand, or small stones.
We encourage families to bring a separate pair of clean indoor shoes and change into them before entering the gym.
This small habit helps preserve the facilities we all share.
7. Choosing Soccer Shoes by Age: A Guide for Parents
Every child develops at a different pace. Age is a useful starting point, but the playing surface, experience level, and comfort should always guide your decision.
Ages 3–4: Little Feet, First Steps
At this stage, soccer should feel like play.
Children are learning to move with the ball, follow simple instructions, balance, and participate in group activities.
Recommended: Lightweight, comfortable, non-marking athletic shoes or properly fitted indoor soccer shoes for gym sessions.
Expensive cleats are unnecessary for introductory indoor training.
Ages 5–6: Little Feet, Big Steps
Children begin developing more confidence with the ball, coordination, and basic soccer movements.
Recommended: Non-marking indoor soccer shoes or suitable athletic shoes for gym sessions, and appropriate outdoor cleats when training on natural grass.
Ages 7–9: Midfield
At this age, players typically begin practicing more structured passing, dribbling, shooting, and small-sided games.
Recommended: Indoor soccer shoes for gym sessions and surface-appropriate outdoor footwear for field training.
Good traction and a secure fit become increasingly important as movements become faster.
Ages 10–14: Skills, Match Play, NextGen, and Girls Soccer
Older players often train with greater intensity, including technical drills, quick changes of direction, and competitive games.
Recommended: Properly fitted soccer footwear specifically designed for the training surface.
Players participating in both indoor and outdoor soccer may need separate pairs.
Important safety reminder: Shin guards are essential for sessions involving matches and contact play. They should fit properly and remain securely in place underneath soccer socks.
At MVB F.C., we encourage families to make protective equipment part of their child's regular soccer routine.
8. Indoor vs. Outdoor Soccer Shoes: Quick Comparison
9. How Should Soccer Shoes Fit Kids?
Buying the right type of shoe is only half the job. The fit matters just as much.
When trying on soccer shoes, parents should check that:
The toes have a little room without excessive empty space.
The heel stays secure when the child walks or runs.
The shoes don't squeeze the sides of the feet.
The child can move comfortably without pain.
The shoes stay securely fastened.
Avoid buying shoes several sizes too large just to make them last longer.
Oversized shoes can interfere with ball control and may cause the child's feet to slide inside the shoes.
Because children's feet grow, check the fit regularly throughout the season.
If a child consistently experiences pain, rubbing, or pressure, the shoes may not be suitable.
10. Do Expensive Soccer Shoes Make Kids Better Players?
Not necessarily.
It's easy to believe that professional-looking soccer shoes will help a child play like their favourite athlete.
But developing soccer skills takes much more than equipment.
At MVB F.C., our approach emphasizes ball mastery, coordination, repetition, confidence, teamwork, and learning through practice.
A comfortable, affordable pair of shoes designed for the correct surface is often a better investment than an expensive pair that doesn't fit properly.
For young beginners, we encourage parents to focus on participation and enjoyment before purchasing specialized equipment.
The best soccer shoes are the ones that help your child move comfortably, play safely, and enjoy learning.

11. Save Money on Kids' Soccer Gear: MVB Gear Exchange
Pass It Forward Program: Because Every Child Deserves to Play
Children grow quickly, and soccer shoes that fit perfectly today might be too small in just a few months. For families, constantly replacing soccer cleats, indoor shoes, and other equipment can become expensive.
But what happens to all those soccer shoes and shin guards that are still in great condition?
At MVB F.C. Soccer School in Mississauga, we believe they deserve a second life!
That's why we created the MVB Gear Exchange: Pass It Forward Program, a community initiative that helps families share gently used soccer equipment and makes the game more accessible to children.
Have Soccer Shoes or Equipment Your Child Has Outgrown?
Instead of leaving them unused in a closet, consider passing them forward!
Families can donate gently used indoor soccer shoes, outdoor cleats, shin guards, and other soccer gear. We share available items with our MVB F.C. community so they can find a new home.
Looking for Affordable Soccer Gear for Your Child?
You don't always need to buy new equipment.
If your child needs soccer shoes or other gear, contact us to find out what's currently available through our Gear Exchange. We'll help arrange for available items to be passed along.
Before using second-hand soccer shoes, always check that they fit properly, are in good condition, and are appropriate for the playing surface. For indoor soccer, remember that shoes must have clean, non-marking soles.
Every pair of shoes passed forward can help another child take their next step in soccer.
Whether you're donating equipment or looking for something your child needs, we'd love to hear from you!

12. Frequently Asked Questions About Kids' Soccer Shoes
Can my child wear regular sneakers to indoor soccer?
Yes, provided they are clean, non-marking, fit securely, and offer appropriate grip and stability. For more advanced indoor play, dedicated indoor soccer shoes are usually preferable.
Are indoor soccer shoes the same as turf shoes?
No. Indoor soccer shoes have flat soles for hard courts, while turf shoes have many small rubber nubs designed for artificial turf.
Do black soles always leave marks?
No. Both dark and light-coloured soles can be non-marking. Look for the manufacturer's non-marking designation rather than relying on colour.
Can my child wear outdoor cleats inside a gym?
No. Outdoor cleats are not suitable for smooth gym floors and may damage the surface.
Does my child need different shoes for summer and winter soccer?
Possibly. If your child trains outdoors on grass during the summer and indoors in a school gymnasium during the winter, different footwear is generally needed.
Should a beginner buy soccer shoes before their first trial class?
Not necessarily. For an indoor trial, clean, suitable non-marking athletic shoes are usually enough. Check with the program before attending.
What should I bring to my child's first soccer class?
Comfortable sports clothing, appropriate footwear, a water bottle, and shin guards when required for the program.
Most importantly, bring a willingness to learn and have fun!
Where Can I Find Affordable or Second-Hand Soccer Shoes in Mississauga?
Families can contact MVB F.C. to ask about available equipment through our MVB Gear Exchange: Pass It Forward Program.
Availability depends on what other families have donated, but it's a great way to give gently used soccer equipment a second life.
13. Taking Care of Our Soccer Community, One Step at a Time
At MVB F.C., we believe soccer teaches more than passing, shooting, and scoring goals.
It also teaches responsibility, respect, and teamwork.
Our indoor training takes place in school facilities shared with students and other community programs. We've recently been reminded about black scuff marks appearing on gym floors, and we're asking our families to help us prevent further damage.
We know these marks are not intentional.
By choosing clean, non-marking shoes, our players help protect the facilities that make community soccer possible.
It's a simple lesson with a lasting message: being a great teammate also means taking care of the spaces we share.
